Beijing, 2023 – Recognising the greater need to raise awareness about scam prevention, Malaysia's SunStrong Entertainment recently held an awards ceremony in Beijing, China, where a total of US$128,000 (RM590,656) was awarded to winning entries, including a number of Malaysian-made works.

The international event, co-organized by China's Horizon Corporate Volunteer Consultancy (HCVC), began in November of last year and attracted 59 entries in the Open Category and 29 entries in the Student Category, respectively. Each category had ten entries shortlisted.

The contest, themed "Contribute Your Talent To Prevent Scam," also signifies a positive engagement in the arts between the people of Malaysia and China for a shared cause, as evidenced by performances of Malay traditional dances and Chinese fan dance at the ceremony.

SunStrong Entertainment founder Jment Lim, who is also a judge, says, "These works not only show the creativity and talent of the contestants, but also the significance of this contest as we get to see that society at large is concerned about the prevalence of scams, as well as everyone's enthusiasm and devotion for public interest."

He stated that the contest's attempt to combat frauds does not end there, as the winning entries will be made available on key social media platforms and the company's website, with the hope that these works will continue to play a part in scam prevention.

"We may not be able to completely prevent scams from occurring, but we can make every effort to prevent as many tragedies as possible," he argues.

Wang Zhongping, founder and CEO of HCVC, praised SunStrong Entertainment for putting together a unique initiative that helps society as a whole.

"I would like to thank Jment Lim for his strong support, as well as everyone else who has dedicated themselves throughout this contest to ensuring the process runs smoothly," he says. If it were up to me, all of the works on the shortlist should be recognised.

Despite stumbling barriers along the way to the award ceremony, we get to see it through to the end with perseverance. "We will continue to use short films as a tool to raise public awareness."

The first prize of US$5,000 (RM23,073) went to A Forever Promise (China), which centres on a young graduate who becomes a job scam victim, while the second prize, Got Trapped (Malaysia), and third prize, Sink (Malaysia), were awarded US$3,000 (RM13,844) and US$1,500 (RM6,922), respectively, in the Student Category.

Malaysia's The Distant Job, Got Trapped, The Untouchable Sight, Catherine's Love Story, and Anti- Fraud Operation won the US$500 (RM2,307.25) Excellence Award, as did China's The Naked Price and If.

Help (China), which narrates the narrative of a phone fraud victim, won the first prize of US$50,000 (RM230,725) in the Open Category.

Bad Days (Malaysia) finished in second, winning US$20,000 (RM92,290), and Scripted (Malaysia) came in third, winning US$10,000 (RM46,145). Thanking the judges for the honour, the Malaysian winners say it motivates them to create even better work in the future.

When Malaysian entries won every Excellence Award in this category, it was a proud moment. Putih Hati, Love Chess, I'm Here For You, Susan, Money Tree, Bungkam, and Desire were all given US$5,000 (RM23,073) each.

Winners of the Open Category will be able to submit their film proposals to SunStrong Entertainment for a chance to receive a grant of up to US$1 million (RM4.61 million) to help them realise their ambition of shooting a feature film.

Chong Keat Aun, a Golden Horse Award-winning Malaysian filmmaker who serves on the judging panel, stated that the majority of entries are based on human trafficking stories, demonstrating the scope of this troubling issue. He admits that there are sure to be difficulties when conveying a story in ten minutes. To his amazement, all of these submissions considered the mobile watching experience for viewers.

During the selection process, another judge, Oscar-winning Chinese-American documentary filmmaker Ruby Yang, praised the entries and was impressed by several students' entries, which employ news reporting as a style of storytelling and even cast their friends owing to low resources.

Shanxi Film Academy director Jia Yue, Leopard Change Academy director Zhang Dadou, and Nanhai Academy of Arts and Technology honorary dean Zhou Shixing will also be on the panel.

Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – Rene Liu's next solo concert tour, named "2023 Live Tour FINAL CALL World Tour in Malaysia," is finally set to arrive in Malaysia! Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – The 6th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) officially began on July 23rd, with a 7-day film showing at GSC MyTown from 24th July 2023 to 30th July 2023. The opening ceremony was staged in magnificent style at LaLaport BBCC, MIFFest's supporting venue partner.

At the ceremony, a number of exciting film festival activities were unveiled. Aside from film screenings, MIFFest is organising two workshops for directors Johnnie To (1:30 PM on 29th July 2023) and Ryuichi Hiroki (2:00 PM on 25th July 2023) to offer their incisive knowledge to the public, film aficionados, and budding filmmakers. 

Every year, the most anticipated lineup is undoubtedly the selection of screening films of the year, and MIFFest has curated 40 superb and excellent films for the festival audience from Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Azerbaijan, Iran, France, India, Ukraine, Spain, Turkey, and other regions. The lineup is impressive and splendidly which included 'My Small Land' by Emma Kawawada, 'Let the Dance Begin' by Marina Seresesky, 'Snow and the Bear' by Selcen Ergun, 'The Sunny Side of the Street by Lau Kok Rui, 'Plan 75' by Chie Hayakawa, 'Iron Mask' by Kim Sung Hwan, 'Hong Kong Family' by Eric Tsang, and '2 Women' by Ryuichi Hiroki. 'Eraser,''Adoiii Jiwaku!,' and 'Shuttle Life' represented the Malaysian local film lineup. MIFFest has also invited the film team to participate in the post-screening sharing sessions, where they will interact and meet with the audience, discussing their filmmaking journey and experience. "The Malaysia International Film Festival has entered its sixth edition this year," stated Joanne Goh, the festival's founder and president. "I am grateful and thankful to everyone who has supported us throughout this process. It makes me really happy and glad that more people are becoming aware of MIFFest." She also stated that the number of films submitted has increased dramatically compared to prior years, with a total of 40 films being chosen to screen. Bront Palarae has also acted as the festival's ambassador for four editions. Bront noted his delight that numerous new events were added to MIFFest this year, which increased his interest for the festival's agenda.

This year, MIFFest will collaborate with the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia (TECO) on film screenings and forums. Kim Sung Hwan (director of 'Iron Mask') and Ellen Kim (BIFAN Programmer) will moderate the BIFAN forum. Furthermore, the TECO-coordinated forum will be led by six directors: Lau Kok Ru, Jovi Lee, Fiona Roan, Chong Keat Aun, Laha Mebow, and Chan Ching-Lin, and will be moderated by Kuo Ming-Jung (the Southeast Asia and Taiwan programmer for the Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight). The forum will be held at Eslite Bookstore on July 29th and 30th. In terms of film selection, TECO has chosen six feature films and four short films for festival screenings. 'Day off,' the most anticipated Taiwanese heartwarming film of the year, is also included in the roster.

Furthermore, MIFFest and BMW Shorties reported at the earlier press conference that this year's submissions reached a record-breaking 113 short film entries, from which they have picked 10 compelling finalists. During the festival, the top ten finalists will be screened at GSC MyTown and MIFFest Open Air Cinema.

In addition, in keeping with this year's theme of 'NEW TAKE,' MIFFest has introduced new and different activities, such as the MIFFest Open Air Cinema, which will be held at LaLaport Rooftop Garden, to offer the compelling stories of local films in a dynamic environment. 'Year Without a Summer,''Flower in the Pocket,''One Two Jaga,''The Tiger Factory,' and 'Jagat' are among the five films to be shown at the Open Air Cinema. From the 24th to the 28th of July, audiences may witness these five acclaimed local films at LaLaport Rooftop Garden. To improve the outdoor movie experience, the festival has also co-organized the first-ever MIFFest Marketplace, which will take place from the 22nd to the 30th and has attracted a varied range of vendors. 'Eraser' kicks off the film festival, with 'See You at the Rally' serving as the closing picture.

The Malaysia International Film Festival is pleased to showcase 'Eraser,' directed by Malaysian Mark Lee See Teck, this year. It serves as the year's opening picture and has important tribute and commemorative value as it is also the final work of late actress Adibah Noor. The film illustrates the struggle of a fractured family surviving in a culturally diverse environment. This film will have its world premiere at a film festival and in theatres. The actors, including Namron, Angela Chan, Alyssa Lee, and Dhiya Ariffin, attended the screening and shared their filming experiences with director Mark Lee See Teck. The filmmaker also discussed how the film began as a short film and evolved into a feature film. Namron, one of the key cast members, also revealed his favourite scene from the filming and highlighted some amusing anecdotes.

In addition, the festival's closing picture, 'See You at the Rally,' directed by Taiwanese director Kanny Chang, will be screened. The film follows Zhou Da Long, a middle-aged lame father, his 10-year-old son Dong Dong, and former champion racer Ah Jun, who enters their lives by happenstance. Kanny Chang expertly transports us to the intense world of racing, where emotion and determination combine in the film. The enthralling story emphasises the importance of resilience, tenacity, and never giving up on one's aspirations. In a world when ambitions are threatened, 'See You at the Rally' offers as a poignant reminder to never give up. The major actors, James Wen and Jack Tan, will also take part in the post-screening sharing session to share their memorable experiences on the set.

Finally, the 6th Malaysia Golden Global Awards event will take place on 29th July 2023 at 8 PM at Zepp Kuala Lumpur. The event will be live-streaming on RTM TV2 channel, MIFFest's official Facebook page, and MIFFest TikTok account, as well as a delayed broadcast on Viu TV HK.

Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – Grasshopper, Hong Kong's famed singing and dancing group, returned to Malaysia after a four-year hiatus for their magnificent concert, "RE:GRASSHOPPER Concert Live In Malaysia 2023."On 28th July 2023, the event took place at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting captivating the crowd with nostalgic tunes and electrifying performances.

Grasshopper has been a major player in the music industry for an astonishing 38 years, thanks to outstanding members Calvin Choy, Remus Choy, and Edmond So. Their lasting popularity and unshakeable position as one of Hong Kong's most beloved ensembles are testaments to their great musicianship and showmanship.

The event began with an intriguing "Intro + Lonely," setting the tone for an amazing night. The trio wowed the audience with a flawless blend of classic hits and new arrangements, accompanied by intriguing audio-visual components that brought a sense of grandeur to the concert.

Ellen Kim, the Programme Director of BIFAN, and Kim Sung Hwan, the Director of the film "Iron Mask," were here in this forum to share their valuable opinions and suggestions with audiences at GSC MyTown, KL. 

"It's challenging because we always have a lot to tell in a film, sometimes some sensitive topics that we're too busy to consider," said Kim Sung Hwan. “Thinking about our films, our existence, unanswered issues, and even budget limits. We become more social and work more. I recall going to the movies to unwind, to enjoy the film and the ambiance, and to let go of my worries. It's always a good method to transport listeners from their everyday lives to a another realm. A smart director incorporates a good question into a picture, and spectators change their minds after watching; two hours are valuable for a filmmaker." 

Kim Sung Hwan stated for the film "Iron Mask" that he attempted to focus on sound effects and approach the audiences. When "Iron Mask" was screened in theatres, he sat back and observed how the crowd reacted, whether they were astonished, tense, or fell asleep. 

Ellen Kim's professional advice on the issues of language in the Genre Movies industry: "People said that comedy is the most difficult in this issue." Thailand and Vietnam offer romantic comedy and action comedy films, however these are too infrequent for outsiders to learn other countries' humour and culture. For international audiences to experience, genre films have some power. For example, while "Squid Game" is not a film, it has clear rules and games are widely appreciated by global audiences. It's a great way to learn about other cultures and how people live."

For this question, Kim Sung Hwan recalled Charlie Chaplin's film, in which viewers laughed despite the lack of dialogue. During the pandemic, audiences prefer to stay at home and watch Netflix. It is a struggle for filmmakers nowadays to get moviegoers to return to the cinema. It's never comparable to experiencing fantastic cinematic aspects like sound and vision effects in a theatre. 

Kim Sung Hwan also discussed how Korean culture has become popular. He pondered when the fad started, and he guessed it all started with PSY's song "Gangnam Style." It's a major surprise to him that "Squid Game" has suddenly become popular. 

When Kim Sung Hwan was asked how AI, which is currently trending, becomes a threat to us, he informed the audience, "AI appears to be a threat, but actually we can use it to help us." Have you got a story to tell? Trends are becoming easier to predict because we now have AI to help us express our story."

Ellen Kim and Kim Sung Hwan taught viewers a lot, and here is some advice they gave to Malaysian filmmakers: "Being too 'new' is a trap." We always want to be unique and unusual, yet this can be off-putting to audiences. You must understand the balance. I always ask myself, "What do I really care about?" What is the story I want to tell? I'll be naturally different from others if I dig myself deep enough. Be willing to try new things. Kim Sung Hwan stated, "Live well."

"You must watch a large number of films and films." Many Korean filmmakers view a film multiple times, evaluate it scene by shot, and dig it until there is nothing left. There are so many clichés with the same features. You must be really imaginative, adjust the regulations, and so forth. "Invention is good, but you must master it," Ellen Kim stated.

Ryuichi Hiroki, a veteran Japanese director and screenwriter, gave a masterclass about making a female-dominated film.

Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) successfully organised the Masterclass with Ryuichi Hiroki on Tuesday, 25th July 2023, in Hall 2 in GSC MyTown. The theme was 'Telling Women's Stories: A Masterclass with Ryuichi Hiroki,' and it drew a large number of cinema aficionados, filmmakers, and audiences. 

Director Ryuichi Hiroki is well-known in the Japanese cinema industry as a director and screenwriter, as well as for his profound understanding into women's tales. This masterclass looked at how women's tales are portrayed and expressed in film, as well as how to empower and express female characters while also exploring their inner feelings.

The masterclass was conducted in Japanese with the presence of an English interpreter. Ryuichi Hiroki presented his creative expertise and a wealth of professional knowledge throughout the Masterclass, as well as interacted with the attendees, answered questions, and provided professional advise. He even used his sense of comedy to convey his artistic path.

Hiroki, on the other hand, stated that he made 5 films last year and that his stories differ from those of many other directors. He enjoys telling stories through films based on his own views. 

In terms of his approach to the women, he mentioned that before shooting, he always asks them what they think of the story. When the story's idea and script are complete, he will let them to draw their own conclusions from the scripts. He also stated that he would not allow the actresses to prepare or practise continually prior to shooting since it would alter the actresses' initial feelings and impressions of the screenplay. Furthermore, he provided advice on how he discusses scenes with actresses. He will be as straightforward as possible in order for them to gain a more direct and in-depth comprehension of the story in order to discover their sensations and emotions.

In addition to his thoughts, Ryuichi Hiroki made several recommendations for emerging directors and filmmakers. According to him, if you want to start making a film, you need construct your own false universe, a real setting, do additional research, and think about how to deliver the tale you want to tell. He also stated that in order to improve your own films, you should see a wide range of genres and sorts of films. "I love watching films; I've learned a lot from them and apply it to my films," he says.

Director Hiroki also stated that there are numerous factors to consider both before and after filming. 'Shopping Mall Boy' wins the MIFFest Project Market 2023 Best Project Award, while 'Hold My Gaze' wins the TAICCA Award.

Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – The two-day MIFFest Project Market (MPM) 2023 concluded successfully on Wednesday (26th July 2023) at Bougainvillaea 1, PARKROYAL COLLECTION KL. At the closing event, MIFFest Project Market presented the winners of the Best Project Award sponsored by Definitive Entertainment and the TAICCA Award sponsored by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA). Congratulations to 'Shopping Mall Boy,' who won the Best Project Award and a cash prize of RM20,000; and, at the same time, 'Hold My Gaze,' which earned the TAICCA Award and a cash prize of USD 5,000.

"We're very excited about these upcoming projects, though only one will be chosen from among these ten."“So, for others, please contact me to see what we can collaborate and co-produce on, because all of your projects are truly fantastic."  MIFFest Project Market 2023 jury member Shamin Yusof stated.

'Shopping Mall Boy' is a coming-of-age drama film with a human interest theme. It will be directed by Sebastian Ng and produced by Lim Benji, both of whom are Malaysians. This cinematic project is still in the planning stages. 'Hold My Gaze' is a drama film that will be directed by Carlo Enciso Catu, a Pampanga-based Filipino director, and produced by Bradley Liew and April Batican. This film project is in the early stages of development funding.

Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – Famous Hong Kong director Johnnie To served as the Chairman of the Jury for the 6th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest). He jokingly said he "understood" all ten films that made it to the final selection and expressed his hope for more young filmmakers in Malaysia to have the freedom to create, which would lead to a flourishing film industry.

Having previously served as a jury member at prestigious film festivals like Venice, Cannes, and Berlin, Johnnie To was invited to be the Chairman of the Jury for the 6th MIFFest. Regarding the films in competition this year, he remarked that movies from different regions can present diverse cultures. He humorously added, "I have been to many different film festivals, and there were many films I couldn't understand, but this time, I could understand all ten films, and they were also easy to digest."

Reflecting on his initial exposure to Asian cinema, Johnnie To expressed surprise, saying, "I never thought that countries in the Asian region, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, would have such good standards. Perhaps the films I saw before didn't have a strong presence in history, but with the works I've seen now, it's a promising cultural beginning. Telling stories to others through film is a great prospect. I also see many young directors, and one Indonesian film is the director's debut work. I hope the new generation of filmmakers will have excellent opportunities, and the path of Asian cinema will only get better."

Participating in the Malaysia International Film Festival for the first time, Johnnie To regarded it as a historic moment. He said, "The timing is just right. When I attended different film festivals in the past, I had interactions with many Malaysian directors. Over a decade ago, people heavily relied on foreign actors TVB, and they didn't know how to make significant progress. But now, more than ten years later, a younger generation is emerging, believing that making films is possible. The film festival helps them. It provides a platform for them to showcase their talents, both locally and internationally. This is a long-term path that should be actively explored."

Regarding film creation, Johnnie To felt deeply, saying, "Continuing to develop freely and with creative freedom will bring about new things. We don't just want films to be seen in Hong Kong and Malaysia; the goal of filmmaking is to reach a global, international audience. Though we come from different film worlds, our common aim is to promote the film industry. I hope the film festival can continue to work hard and grow stronger."

Apart from Johnnie To as the Jury Chairman, other members of the 6th Malaysia International Film Festival's jury included renowned Vietnamese actress Truong Ngoc Anh, Japanese director Ryuichi Hiroki, Malaysian actor Zizan Razak, and Singaporean filmmaker Eric Khoo.

回想起初次接触亚洲电影时，杜琪峰感到惊讶：“我没想到亚洲地区如印尼、马来西亚、越南等国家也有出色的电影，也许以前我对这些地区的电影历史了解不够深入，但现在看到这些作品，我发现这是一个很好的文化开端，通过电影向世界讲述故事，这是一个非常有前途的事情。我也看到了许多年轻的导演，其中有一部印尼电影是导演的处女作，我希望新一代的电影人能有很好的发展，亚洲电影的未来会越来越光明。”

谈到电影创作，杜琪峰深有感触地说：“只有保持自由发展，创作自由，才能有新的创意。我们不仅仅是要让香港和马来西亚看到，拍电影的目标是要让全世界、国际观众都能欣赏。虽然我们是来自不同电影世界的人，但我们共同的目标是推动电影行业，希望电影节能持续发展壮大。”

除了杜琪峰担任评审团主席，第6届马来西亚国际电影节的其他评审团成员还包括来自越南的著名女演员张玉英、日本导演广木隆一、马来西亚演员兹占拉萨以及新加坡著名电影人邱金海。

The 6th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) came to a close with Sylvia Chang and Johnnie To's Witness to the Winners of the Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) 2023.

Kuala Lumpur, 2023 – The 6th Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) Ceremony was held on 29th July 2023 at Zepp KL and concluded flawlessly. This 7-day film festival (MIFFest) has drawn a large number of film lovers, filmmakers, and moviegoers. Many outstanding films, forums, and masterclasses were organised during the period, which helped many people with a strong interest in the film industry.

Since the film festival has concluded, spectators are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) 2023 winners. Many local and worldwide superstars and artists, including Sylvia Chang, James Wen, Ye Ji Won, Stephanie Arianne, Jack Tan, and others, congregated here. Of course, this year's jury president, Hong Kong director Johnnie To, was also present.

First and foremost, congrats to this year's MIFFest grand prize winner, 'Autobiography'! Makbul Mubarak, an Indonesian director, directed the film. It won five prizes this year, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Screenplay. AUTOBIOGRAPHY is a fantastic, innovative first feature that clearly depicts corruption and falsehoods in a strong way. Overall, the jury is quite impressed with this year's selection, and we look forward to seeing what these young brilliant filmmakers come up with in the future.

This time, director Johnnie To arrived to deliver the Best Film Award to the winning picture 'Autobiography,' saying, "I'm very happy to have this experience to collaborate with every jury member." We chose the winning film in the shortest amount of time. "I believe that a good film can reveal the truth and beauty of human nature."

In addition, the Best Actor Award awarded to Darío Grandinetti of Argentina. He played Carlos in 'Let the Dance Begin,' and the public responded well to his natural and skilled acting abilities. In the meantime, Chieko Baisho, a veteran Japanese actress, earned the Best Actress Award this year for her work in 'Plan 75,' directed by Chie Hayakawa.

For the Best Supporting Actor Award, Arswendy Bening Swara from Indonesia was nominated for his portrayal of Purna in 'Autobiography,' and the Best Supporting Actress Award was given to Stefanie Arianne by James Wen and Jack Tan for her performance as Maria, a Filipino labourer in the film 'Plan 75,' which she performed amazingly. The local film 'Adoiii Jiwaku' then received the Audience Choice Award. The actor Steve Yap directed this picture, which was his directorial debut. The elements between the three local races playfully highlighted the contradictions, tensions, and misunderstandings between races, and exemplified the spirit of One Malaysia. 

The New Hope Award is given to films that communicate positive and hopeful messages. 'Plan 75,' directed by Hayakawa, received the award. This film's message conveys to the audience the meaning of life and existence. The Lifetime Achievement Award, on the other hand, was given to globally acclaimed actress Sylvia Chang. Joanne Goh, the president of MIFFest, presented her. "I remember the first time I stepped into the film industry 52 years ago, and I knew I loved it," Sylvia stated. I'm extremely thankful to have a group of folks who are always there for me. So I constantly remind myself to remain humble. We must ensure that we give our all, whether we win or lose. Thank you very much."

The attendees at this event all expressed their excitement for MIFFest in the following year. They are hoping that the organiser would bring more outstanding films from throughout the world. Of course, the Open Air Cinema programme is extremely popular among locals.
