[Food Outing] EATEA Thai Fusion Restaurant @ Kuantan

Kuantan, June 2018 – Last week me, my wife and my friend Angel (blogger from https://angelhoyunying.blogspot.com/) have visited EATEA Thai Fusion Restaurant in Kuantan and tasted out some of the dishes in the outlet.

EATEA is a restaurant which presents an Asian Thai Fusioncuisine which has adapted the tastes that can suit the local communities. The restaurant has a very cozy and relaxing interior which is suitable for dining and friends gathering. Exteriorly, it has a logo which looks like a Chinese Restaurant Style logo. At night, the signboard of “EATEA” is lit up and you can easily spot it.

Fan-Thai-stic Dining!
If you craves for Thailand style cuisine, then this place is recommended for you guys who are staying in Kuantan.

We have tried out a few of the Thai Drink Series including 3 Layer Cha Keaw (3 Layer Thai Green Tea), Cha Nom Ron (Thai Teh Tarik), 3 Layer Cha Yan (3 Layer Thai Milk Tea), Cha Yan (Thai Milk Tea), Cha Keaw (Thai Green Tea) and Nom Yew (Thai Bandung). The teas provide us a delight to our palate. We especially love the 3 Layer Cha Yan. The tea is infused with pure homemade palm sugar and it’s the real taste of Gula Malacca. All these drinks cost a reasonable price of Rm 4.90 – RM 6.90.

Apart from the drinks, we have also tasted the new addition in the restaurant, the platter series. We have tried out EATEA 海鮮拼盤(Seafood Platter) which consists of a variety to seafood to cater for diners who came in a group. Some of the seafood served include “Mini Lobster” which is very popular recently, Mussels, Bamboo clams, Squids, Clam and etc. The seafood is complemented with the tasty and aromatic White Tomyam that is really palatable. The dish is currently on a promotion and costs RM 99 nett per platter. (Normal Price is RM 118).

Apart from all these, we also enjoyed the Thai styled Fish and Kangkung here. Overall, it was a pleasant food outing at EATEA Kuantan. For those who are living around, do give a try at this Thai Fusion Restaurant. It will worth your time!

[Coverage] Music From Anime by Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra

Kuala Lumpur, June 2018 – Still recall our previous post about “Music From Anime”? (Check out the link here: http://www.wljack.com/2018/05/upcoming-event-music-from-anime-by.html) We have done a concert coverage on the show and we really enjoyed the show very much!

Anime Soundtrack Brought To Live!
Most people may have a pre-occupied opinion that Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra only present classical songs for the audiences. That is a misconception, as MPO has also taken into account of the younger audiences and introduces modern play such as “Music From Anime” which is obviously targeting the youth who are into the Anime Culture.

“Music From Anime” was a really pleasant experience for us as we get to indulge into the orchestrated soundtrack from our favourite anime such as Anpanman, Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle, Laputa: Castle In The Sky, Ponyo On The Cliff, Space Battleship Yamato and last but not least, My Neighbour TOTORO!

The show kicked off with the song Anpanman No March which was very catchy and memorable. It was then followed by the Symphonic Variation Merry-Go-Round and Cave of Mind (Howl’s Moving Castle) that was based on the arrangement by Joe Hisaishi. These two pieces were very soulful and took the form of a lovely waltz.

The next song being performed was Kimi Wo Nosete (Carrying You) from Laputa: Castle In The Sky. The song begins and remains in the minor mode but ends triumphantly in tonic major. Following this, Gake Ne Ue No Ponyo was played by the orchestra. Apart from the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, this show also featured the children choir from Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur Children’s Chorus that has added an additional layer of melody to the already impressive music play.

After the interval of resting, the audiences were treated with the vibrant Orchestral suite from Yamato. It was really an exciting musical composition.

Lastly, we were brought on a journey to explore the adventure of My Neighbour TOTORO via MPO’s Orchestra Stories that include eight separate character pieces such as Stroll, The Village in May, Travelling Soot – Mother, It Was TOTORO!, The Path Of The Wind, A Lost Child, Catbus and My Neighbour TOTORO! It was really an astounding experience as the scenes of the anime actually appeared inside of our minds as the pieces were performed!

We really enjoyed the performance by the conductor Naohisa Furusawa. He was especially energetic and youthful during this show. The dynamic he has with the whole team of orchestra was really remarkable. He also added a surprise to the show during the closing when he actually dressed up in a TOTORO Costume and performed the encore version of My Neighbour TOTORO!

Overall, the show was a pleasant addition to the series of show which Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra offers. I really wish MPO can continue to add more of this similar type of shows.

Anyway, we hope all of you can check out MPO Website (http://mpo.com.my/) for more upcoming musical greatness here. Here, you can find Music That Moves You!

[Coverage] Maximus Musicus Visits The Orchestra @ Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS

Kuala Lumpur, June 2018 – It was a fun family day at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS last weekend with the concert of “Maximus Musicus Visits The Orchestra”. (Check out my previous article on this show http://www.wljack.com/2018/05/upcoming-event-maximus-musicus-visits.html)

A Fun-filled Orchestra for Families With Children!
This was a really fun and entertaining concert especially for those audiences who came with their kids. This show featured Korean-American conductor, Gene Chang who is well known for his passionate approach to music and Yasmin Yusuff (Miss Malaysia 1978) as the narrator that lead the audiences along the journey with Maximus Musicus.

A joyful ride with familiar classics!
The show features many classic pieces that are popular through centuries, well-loved and no strangers to us like Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio, Ravel’s Bolero, Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, Stravinsky’s The Firebird: Infernal Dance, Rossini’s William Tell: Finale, Grieg’s ‘Peer Gynt’ Suite No.1, Op.46: 1. Morning Mood, Strauss’s Radetzky March and Olafsdottir’s Maxi’s Song.

All these musical masterpieces were introduced as we progress along the story with Maximus Musicus. To make the story more intriguing, the orchestra also produced sound effects as Maxi explored different instruments. All of these created a comical atmosphere which has brought a lot of laughter to the younger audiences. In addition to that, Yasmin Yusuff’s narration was also very remarkable. She was able to deliver the story very interestingly and manage to captivate the audiences.

Of course, the adventure was more joyful and exciting with the enthusiasm shown by Gene Chang. He was thoughtful and energetic. We really enjoyed the moment when he involved the audiences in clapping along to Strauss’s Radetzky March.

Overall, it was really a jolly time at “Maximus Musicus Visits The Orchestra” and I am sure it has made a lot of the children audiences to fall in love with music!

About Jeryl Lee Concert Tour Live in KL

A Great Achievement for the 18 years old Songstress! 10 Years Of Preparation!
Ever since “Sing! China”, Jeryl Lee continues to grow and accomplish even more. First, with the release of her own album. Then, with her recent big win in PWH 30 Awards (check out our coverage: http://www.wljack.com/2018/06/event-coverage-pwh30-awards-show-30.html). Now, with her latest achievement, which was her very own concert show! Her accomplishment is really amazing at such a young age!

The concert features its own introductory and descriptive videos in between every segments of the performances. Some of the themes include 蜕变, 羽化, 展翅and etc. Basically it’s a metaphorical expressions of the growth of the 18 years old Penangite girl into who she is now, a renowned and well-loved Mandopop songstress.

During the show, Jeryl Lee mentioned that it’s not an easy journey for her. She highlighted that she has spent 10 years of her time to achieve what she is now. She has taken part in singing competitions since the age of 8 years old. There were both sweetness and bitterness throughout the journey. She thanked all of the people who have helped her and supported her all the way! She also thanked her parents for being so supportive.

Strong Vocal! Mesmerizing Performances!
The concert kicked off strong with her very own song, “黑洞. She has impressed all of the audiences with her angelic and melodious voice. During the concert, she also performed a lot of challenging and difficult-to-sing songs such as 我是一只小小小鸟”, “Never Enough” and etc. She also performed the songs which have made people know her including 心有独”, “Fight Song”and etc.

In addition to that, Jeryl also performed multiple upbeat medleys and she also surprised the audiences by delivering energetic dances performances on stage. Amazing!

Guests Appearances On Stage!
Another highlight of the show would be the guest artistes for the concert. The concert featured not just one guest artiste, but a total of 4 guest artistes including Pink陈珂冰, Meer Nash沙米尔, Kexin林可欣and Rynn Lim林宇中.

Rynn Lim林宇中hasperformed duet with Jeryl Lee无与伦比的美丽. He said that he seldom make guest appearance on others’ concert. But he was touched by Jeryl’s voice and thus he agreed to be the guest artiste for her.

Overall, it was a really impressive show by Jeryl Lee and I am sure everyone who has attended the show have enjoyed it as much as I do!

[Kpop Review] BLACKPINK “SQUARE UP” Album and Music Video “DDU-DU-DDU-DU”

Rejoice, all BLINKs in the world! Our queens BLACKPINK is back in your area as the next revolution with their latest mini-album “SQUARE UP”! The album was just released yesterday on 15th June 2018 and I really think it’s awesome!

Featuring a total of four songs, including 뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU)”, “Forever Young”, “Really” and “See U Later”! All of the songs are catchy and groovy the way you would expect from BLACKPINK!

I always love BLACKPINK for their great balance of vocals and rapping. Personally, I am always intrigued by Lisa’s fast rap. This time she delivers her slick rapping as usual and we can also get to listen briefly to her vocal too in Forever Young. Apart from Lisa, Jennie has also proven that she can deliver very smooth fast rap. All of the 4 songs in this album feature Jennie’s prominent rapping skills.

Of course, both the vocalists in the group Jisoo and Rose have also demonstrated their melodious voice very well in this album. Their mellifluous voice in wide range of keys are always captivating.

My favourite song in this album is 뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU)”. It is really addictive. I also enjoyed their very colourful Music Video too. Really an entertaining video to watch!

Oh yeah, by the way, the music video 뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU)” has already hit over 14 Millions Views within 1 day. It’s definitely one of the fastest Kpop Girl Group’s Music Videos to have achieved such a huge amount of views within one day!

Overall, this mini-album has hit me like a DDU-DU DDU-DU! I am sure you guys will like it too! If you are new to KPOP, BLACKPINK is definitely a great starting point for you to fall in love in KPOP!

Last but not least, I wonder when will BLACKPINK drop by Malaysia for a concert some day in the future? I really hope such a day would come.

[Coverage] Janice Yan 阎奕格“I Have Myself 我有我自己” Fan Meeting In Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, July 2018 –It’s been quite some time since Janice Yan has come over to Malaysia for a promo event. Last weekend would be a treat for the fans as she has come over to Malaysia for a few activities including Famine 30 hours, her own promotional eventsand finally a Fans Meeting. Our team from www.wljack.comhas been given an opportunity to do a coverage on her fans meeting event.

Event: [Coverage] Janice Yan 阎奕格“I Have Myself 我有我自己” Fan Meeting In Malaysia
Time: 7.30pm
Date: 22ndJuly 2018
Venue: Loud Speaker Family Karaoke, Puchong Outlet LoudZone (Level 3)

During the fans meeting, Janice Yan has made the appearance by performing her new songs. She has performed a total of 5 songs during the fans meeting including 我有我自己”, “一小片天堂”, “亦敌亦友”, “让一切随风” and “只有你还在”. There was a moment of funny hiccup when she actually forgot the lyrics for one of her songs. She even asked for the help from the fans and thankfully one of the fans provided her with the lyrics book. Such a funny and jovial moment!

Multi-Lingual Proficiency! Janice Utilized Them In Promoting Her Album?
One of the other highlights during the fans meeting was the session whereby the host of the night, My FM DJ Akiasked Janice to promote her latest album in different languages such as Cantonese, English and Mandarin. Janice was very sporting and did it as per suggested. Apart from showing how good she was in all these different languages and dialects, she also demonstrated the more dramatic side of her as she tried to present in different styles.

Janice also highlighted that she’s interested to take on the role of “special agents” in future acting pursue. Last year, she has taken part in 风云音乐剧 performance. For her, the greatest challenge would be trying to play a role which is very soft and polite. This was a big contrast to her more “man” personality in real life.

Fans’ Opportunities to Ask Questions!
The fans meeting session also opened up an opportunity for the fans to submit their own questions for Janice to answer. The questions were then picked from a draw-lot method and she answered it accordingly.

Some of the questions that were asked included:
Who has influenced Janice The Most in her life?
Janice answered that her father has influenced her the most in her life. He’s always supportive for her and he advised her to proceed with singing career if she’s really passionate in it.

What is the animal that Janice loves the most?
She mentioned butterfly and cat.

Apart from singing, what is her other strength/talent?
Janice admitted that she can be quite athletic. She believes her sports is her second strength after singing.

What does Janice feels about her own personality?
She mentioned that she has a typical horoscopic personality of an Aries. She’s disciplined and she holds strong to her principles.

That’s all for the coverage of the Janice Yan 阎奕格I Have Myself 我有我自己” Fan Meeting In Malaysia. I am sure all of the fans were very grateful to be able to spend the evening gathering with Janice. Million thanks to HIM Music for giving us the opportunities to do a coverage on the event.

[Upcoming Event] SWAN LAKE BY BALLET WEST UK & THE DANCE COMPANY

DANCE INTO THE MAGICAL WORLD OF TCHAIKOVSKY’S SWAN LAKE AS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE WORLD-CLASS DANCERS FROM BALLET WEST UK!!

Genting Highlands, August 2018 –Ballet, a widespread and highly technical form of danceis believed to have originated during the Italian Renaissance and made popular by the King Louis XIV’s court throughout history. Ballet is an artistic dance form performed to music, using precise and highly formalized set steps and gestures.

Classical ballet, which originated in Renaissance Italy and established its present form during the 19th century, is characterized by light, graceful movements and the use of pointe shoes with reinforced toes. Today, the dance form has evolved into a globally influential force and has defined the foundational techniques used in many other dance genres and cultures. It is precisely this reason why it is so beloved by audience all over the world and why ballerinas in the world earn respect and awe for their dedication to the prestigious art form.

In 1875, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed Swan Lake, a masterpiece that would be synonymous with his name alongside The Nutcracker. Featuring some of the most beloved pieces in the classical canon, Swan Lake is a spellbinding riveting tale of love, magic and tragedy, chronicling the tale of how Prince Siegfried fell in love with the beautiful Odette while he was hunting by a lake during his birthday. Unfortunately, Odette’s curse by the evil sorcerer Van Rothbart stand in the way of their growing love. 1877, the first Swan Lake ballet premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and it has continued to win the hearts of its audience all over the world for over two centuries. The secret to Swan Lake’s popularity is not just in Tchaikovsky’s genius—it is also attributed to the beauty of ballet as an art form to effectively bring the compelling story of Odette and Prince Siegfried to life.

SWAN LAKE BY BALLET WEST UK – ASIA PREMIERE
For the first time ever in Malaysia for their Asia Premiere, a professional full-UK ballet cast is bringing Tchaikovsky’s iconic and mesmerizing Swan Lake to glorious life in a full-length performance at the Genting International Showroom at Resorts World Genting. With six spectacular shows set to be staged from Aug 24th to 26th, and from Aug 31st to Sept 2 nd, be ready to marvel at the graceful moves and pirouettes executed by the masterful dancers from Ballet West UK, as led by soloists Jonathan Barton, Natasha Wilson and Uyu Hiromoto.

Event: SWAN LAKE BY BALLET WEST UK – ASIA PREMIERE
Venue: Genting International Showroom at Resorts World Genting
Date: Aug 24th to 26th, and from Aug 31st to Sept 2 nd

Ballet West UK, one of the pioneer in the world of dance, has been responsible for building numerous success stories in the ballet world for over 28 years—which is why you are in for a treat when the curtains lift for this production. They have a track record of sold out performances in more than 40 cities in UK, Europe and China, including Swan Lake in Scotland, Romeo & Juliet in China and Nutcracker in China.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE PRODUCTION OF “SWAN LAKE BY BALLET WEST UK”
Putting a production together was never an easy task. It takes a team of dedicated, passionate and talented team whether it is on the front or at the back-end production to see things through till the very end. Swan Lake by Ballet West was no exception. In fact, it took a team of 40 people with top ballet master Daniel Jobs; one of the few ballet masters left in the world who has worked with legends like George Balanchine, Margot Fonteyn and John Cranko , and the creame de la creame of the ballet world to come together to produce this show in a span of 6 months.

The dancers of Swan Lake by Ballet West UK goes through a series of auditions to ace the areas of versatility, strong technique, creative improvisation skills and powerful-presence in dancers. We want to see how the dancers use their movement vocabulary to move and express in the respective roles. Out of 113 that auditioned, we’ve selected 11, to join our existing company, for Malaysia.”, said Daniel Job.

Aside from observing a strict diet, the dancers are required to adhere to vigorous training programs to prepare them both physically and mentally for each of the role they played; and that would means back to back daily full rehearsals throughout training periods that could lasted up to five months.

The other most important elements in a ballet production are the very fine details to costumes. Showcasing only the very best for this production, the costumes in Swan Lake by Ballet West UK are all individually hand sewn pieces. The very best fabrics from Scotland and the US were specially flown to the UK where they were individually hand sewn by the wardrobe mistress ; with each tutu costing up to 2000 pounds and will require up to 90 hours to make with about 100m of material.

A ballerina’s pointe shoes are yet another important aspect to the production’s costume. As dancers have different type of feet and toe length, arch flexibility and strength, all pointe shoes in this production need to be customized and handmade in the UK. The shoes are wrapped in beautiful satin and each shoe has a life-span of about 12-15hours each. So the entire Swan Lake Production may go through about 500 pair of shoes, just for the time we they are in Malaysia!

“Danced in Swan Lake many times, including with the English National Ballet. However being in the Swan Lake by Ballet West UK production is very emotional. Its beautifully choreographed by Daniel Job; a legend, amongst the Scottish Highlands. There are beautiful lochs (lakes in Scottish) surrounding where we rehearse... the
character feels real & comes alive. It feels like home. And for us to bring this production to Malaysia, we are truly honoured.” – Natasha Watson; lead cast in Swan Lake by Ballet West UK

With a production with high stakes like Swan Lake by Ballet West, you will find only the best of the best at the helm; in this case, it is choreographer extraordinaire Daniel Job who also serves as artistic advisor and ballet master for this production. He has won awards like the Maya Plisetskaya Competition Russia and his amazing body of work can be found with George Balanchine, Dame Margot Fonteyn, American Ballet Theatre, Geneva Opera, Deutche Opera Berlin, Les Ballets de Marseille and the Royal Danish Ballet.

Rounding up the all-star cast are talents from The Dance Company & Ballet West International Touring Company like ballet master Jonathan Barton and Natasha Watson. The former is a Genee medalist coach while the latter is an actress, a budding choreographer, a Genee medallist and the only British dancer to compete at the Prix de Lausanne in 2015.

They will be joined by Uyu Hiromoto, principal dancer, medalist at the South Africa International Ballet Competition, BBC Young Dancer Finalist, Genee Finalist and recipient of the prestigious Solo Seal Award

Get ready to be swept along in the Swan Lake adventure in a 150 minutes show including intermission that will leave you agape at the beauty and grace of ballet accompanied by beloved pieces of musical work. Go on and grab those tickets for this can’t-be-missed show. Tickets starts from RM388 and above and are available for purchase at www.rwgenting.com.

Another must attend is an exclusive Ballet West International Masterclass, conducted by Fenton—a versatile dancer from many disciplines that range from contemporary, ballet and jazz. Fenton, together with ballet mistress & professor of applied gymnastics for ballet, Sonia Fajardo will be at hand to tutor aspiring ballerinas longing to turn this art into a lifelong vocation—with helpful tips and showcase to improve your work. Priced at RM585 per masterclass, the masterclasses are available on 22nd August, 23rd August, 24th August and 30th August at the Arena of Stars, Genting.

Since 2009, percussionists and musicians from Taiwan, Japan, Spain, Norway, Netherlands, USA, Indonesia, Vietnam as well as home grown groups, have been invited to be part of the festival. This year, we have invited Abbos Kosimov (Uzbekistan), Ben Walsh (Australia) and U-Hee Company (South Korea) to participate. This ensemble of drummers, percussionists, musicians and artists are all driven by an enduring passion for what they do. [Coverage] UNBEATABLE [Kaleidoscope 5 - HANDS International Drumming Festival] @ KLPac

Kuala Lumpur, August 2018 – Still remember our previous article on‘UNBEATABLE Kaleidoscope 5 – HANDS International Drumming Festival’? (Check out our previous post here: http://www.wljack.com/2018/08/upcoming-event-unbeatable-kaleidoscope.html). Our team from www.wljack.comhas been given a golden opportunity to do a coverage on this upbeat and exciting event.

Great Beats Blended By Traditional and Modern Percussions!
Our team has attended the final show of the event and we were really enthralled by the unique presentation of percussions that have utilized both the traditional as well as the modern instruments. (And some innovative instruments too!)

Kicking off the show was Abbos Kosimov from Uzbekistan who is widely appreciated as an international phenomenon. During the show, he has mesmerized the audiences with his dynamic performances. His quick hand percussions were totally breath-taking and audiences can also feel his passion and joy in performing.

Apart from that, we also get to watch the performances by HANDS, a renowned Malaysian percussion ensemble which has created a veritable bang in the music scene in Kuala Lumpur since 1997. HANDS was divided into two performing groups HANDS 1 which consists of the original core members and HANDS 2that consists of some members who are performing part-time. Nonetheless, both of the performing groups were amazing and have fascinated the fans with their ground breaking beats!

Last but not least, we were also impressed by Ben Walsh’s performance which was very innovative and astonishing. Benjamin Walsh is the drummer from Australian electronic legends, THE BIRDand he is also a world renowned percussionist. He has showcased his creativity by inventing new approaches in creating rhythm and sound. We really love his performance using the wheels of drum! This is really something unique to watch!

Most importantly, it’s also fun to see how Benjamin Walsh duo with Abbos Kosimov on stage. We can totally feel their joy in performing together!

Overall, we really had a great time at UNBEATABLE [Kaleidoscope 5 - HANDS International Drumming Festival]. Stay tuned to our website for more coverage on performing arts events!

Once she started singing, everyone was amazed by her spectacular vocal. Following ”, she performed another two songs which are 辛德瑞拉and 水中央”.  After singing three of the songs continuously, Penny has taken the opportunity to interact and talk to the audiences. She mentioned that she has ventured into the musical journey since 18 years ago, she’s glad that she can finally have a solo concert with such a grand scale in her home country.

The concert is a satisfying treat for all of the fans as Penny Tai has sang over 20+ songs (if including medley, it would be over 30+ songs). Some of the notable songs performed included 爱疯了单身潜逃野蔷薇纯属意外怎样and etc.

Encore! AUNTIE! AUNTIE! AUNTIE!
One of the biggest highlight of the night was the encore part whereby instead of shouting “Encore”, the fans shouted “Auntie” as per instructed by a cloaked person on stage who brought out a signboard of “Auntie”. Finally it turned out that Penny was the cloaked person. Such a surprising gimmick!

During the encore session, she has performed one of her most iconic song 你要的爱which is the theme song for the popular drama 流星花园. She also performed which was one of her earliest songs.

Overall, I have to say, this was one of the best concert show I have ever attended to in the recent years. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the emotions that flown through me listening to Penny’s mesmerizing voice. Million thanks to the organizer for providing our team an opportunity to do a coverage on the show!

[Upcoming Event] Gala Concert MPO 20th Anniversary
MALAYSIAN PIANIST TENGKU IRFAN PERFORMS WITH & CONDUCTS THE MPO!

Kuala Lumpur, August 2018 - Tengku Irfan, Malaysian music prodigy and piano virtuoso, recently announced as the Youth Brand Ambassador for the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO). He will open the MPO’s 20th anniversary special season with a concert on Friday, 17 August 2018 at 8.30 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP).

This is an auspicious date as it marks exactly 20 years after the MPO’s inaugural concert at the venue on 17 August 1998. Since its inception, the MPO has stayed true to its commitment to bring the best in classical music. Nonetheless, over the years, it presented music of other genres to appeal to a wider audience. This season, the MPO will continue to enhance the cultural landscape of Kuala Lumpur through its innovative performances of world class standard.

Renowned conductor Jac van Steen will lead the MPO in a programme of music infused with exceptional verve and brilliance; Bartered Bride Overturecomposed by Smetana for one of the best comic operas in the world and the wondrous Scheherazade, a music of intrigue and adventures, composed by Rimsky-Korsakovwho masterfully exploited dazzling orchestral colours and sonorities.

Irfan will dazzle the audience with his magic hands on the piano to perform Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Piano Concerto No.1. He will also step on the podium to conduct the MPO through Dvorak’s Carnival Overture, conjuring the whirl and frenetic bustle of a carnival, an apt choice of music for this celebratory event.

A musician of an exceptional calibre, Irfan started his piano lessons when he was 7 and is today a renowned pianist, composer and conductor in the international music scene. He made his debut with the MPO at DFP in 2009 when he was 11, enthralling the audience with his brilliant improvisation of ‘cadenzas’ on Beethoven’s Piano Concerto. He went on to perform with the MPO in numerous concerts including tours to Sabah and Sarawak, Vietnam and Japan.

Irfan has also performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in 2015 and made his conducting debut at DFP with this young orchestra in December 2017 before touring to Singapore together that month.

Described by The New York Times as ‘eminently cultured’, Irfan has soared high and achieved the impossible; he became a prize winner at the Aspen Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.2 Competition, and has collaborated with orchestras such as the Singapore Symphony, São Paulo State Youth Orchestra and Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra, and luminaries such as Neeme Järvi, Nikolai Alexeev, Evan Rogister, Claudio Cruz and Darrell Ang.

Be part of the MPO’s 20th anniversary celebration, a brilliant showcase of a true Malaysian virtuosity, only at DFP!
