[Movie Review] Operation Red Sea

[Movie Review] Operation Red Sea

Operation Red Sea is a Chinese-Hong Kong action film directed by Dante Lam, who also directed the Operation Mekong and many other top box office movies. The movie consumes around CNY500 million (approximately MYR310 million) and was filmed in Morocco, showcasing military battle by the Chinese Military team that covers land, sea and air.

Our team was given an opportunity to do a review on the film during a special screening which was recently held at Bona Cinemas, Sky Avenue Genting Highlands.

Review
Operation Red Sea is definitely an amazing military based film and there’s no wonder why the film has been so well-received since its release. The movie is based loosely on the true story of evacuation of 225 foreign nationals and 600 Chinese citizens from Yemen’s southern port of Aden.

Director Dante Lam has done a spectacular job in trying to recreate the tension on battlefields with the involvement of real military support. Besides depicting the real-life war scenes, the director has also taken the effort to introduce regarding the protagonists in the film. He managed to make you feel for these characters and get emotionally engage with them.

The writing for the show is also remarkable. Every progress of the plot is being connected with a clear dots and lines with a number of emotional moments as well. The theme of teamwork and war was well displayed in the film.

I really love the way the movie was shot. The close-up scenes, bird’s-view-shoots and etc are very realistic. In addition, the makeup and special effect for the film is also great as it infuses real-war gory effects (bloody and shot up body parts) into the film just like how Hacksaw Ridge did.

As for the acting part, I think all of the casts including Zhang Yi, Du Jiang, Huang Jingyu, Hai Qing and Prince Mak have provided a memorable performance which made you care and concern of their characters. The chemistry between the characters are also likeable.

Besides, I also enjoy the background music in the film which has equally provided the intense feelings that can complement with the war scenes in the film.

Overall, I really love this movie and I can feel how much director Dante Lam is in love in military action movies. If you ask me who would I recommend to watch this movie, I would highly suggest those people who love Call Of Duty or Player’s Unknown Battleground to give it a try at this movie. I reckon you would like this movie as much as I do!

Verdict: 8.8/10.0

[Coverage] World Premiere of “Lee Chong Wei”

Kuala Lumpur, April 2018 – Last month marked one of the greatest history in Malaysian sports film as World Premiere of “Lee Chong Wei” has taken place on 9th March 2018. (Check out my previous post on World Premiere of “Lee Chong Wei”: http://www.wljack.com/2018/01/upcoming-event-world-premiere-lee-chong.html).

Setting New Record For Malaysian Sport Film Industry!
The world premiere is the largest premiere ever held in Malaysia attracting approximately 20,000 audiences. In addition to that, the premiere was also graced by the legend himself, Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei with his family, as well as other honourable guests such as Youth and Sports Minister YB Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria, President of Badminton Association of Malaysia alongside the casts and celebrities in the movie.

Transforming Bukit Jalil National Stadium into a mega cinema with a special-built giant 40 metre x 17 metre LED screen for the World Premiere, it was definitely the first of its kind movie premiere in Malaysia. This remarkable attempt has made it into the Asia Book of Records and The Malaysia Book Of Records for being the largest movie premiere.

Mr Teng Bee, the director of the movie has always wanted to make a movie about Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei. He always wish to make his story into a film so that everyone in Malaysia can have a more in-depth glance on how Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei has climbed all the way till what he has achieved now.

Those who have attended the movie premiere also get to listen to Nabila Razali and Priscilla Abby singing the theme song for the movie, titled “Cahaya Juara”.

[Movie Review] Lee Chong Wei (2018)

Lee Chong Wei(2018) tells the story of Malaysian Badminton Legend, Lee Chong Wei and how he first ventured into the sport until he achieved what he is now.

Review
Lee Chong Wei film has tried to capture the journey of Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei into frames on the big screen. The story started from when Lee Chong Wei is young until he becomes the legend whom we all know now. Some of his key badminton matches were also being highlighted in this film.

Director Teng Bee has tried his best in making this biographical movie of our very own country legend into a film that is not just documentary but also entertaining to the audiences. While there are a lot of dramas being included into the movie, the backbone plot of the movie is still regarding the determination of an inspiring sportsman in achieving his dream. In addition to that, the theme is being more emphasized and relatable as the protagonist is someone whom we Malaysians are totally familiar with.

To be honest, I really love how the movie is shot in the badminton match scenes. They even include those top-down camera angle used in live badminton telecast thus making it even more realistic. Besides, I also love the slow-motions and close-ups of the actors executing the smash and shots.

In the aspect of acting, I really love Jake Eng’s acting (he played the young Datuk Lee Chong Wei). He himself is quite adorable and his acting is actually very matured for a young actor at his age.

Of course, the young adult version of Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei played by Tosh Chan is also remarkable. Although he may be a newcomer in film industry, he manages to deliver his role very convincingly too. And yeah, he has a very strong resemblance with the real Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei. Director Teng Bee has really did his best in recruiting look-alike actors for the film. Mark Lee and Yeo Yann Yann both also did a very good job in portraying Lee Chong Wei’s parents.

The film has also included very moving and motivating background soundtrack. Amazing job in the selection of the track! I also love the fact that they included the song “Fikirkan Boleh” into the film! This song is so iconic in those 80s-90s days when people are watching badminton on TV! Everyone from that era can definitely relate!

In terms of editing, I found that the film has a few choppy editing and some flow of the plot are mildly disrupted. But nonetheless, it still manage to deliver a compelling story.

Another little flaw I could see is that, while most of us Malaysians know the persistent match and competition between Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan. The lack of introduction about Lin Danwould make the highlighted matches less engaging and relatable for those viewers who are non-Malaysians. Further build-up on Lin Dan’s ability, strength and his consistent match-ups with Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei would be great in making those scenes more interesting.

Overall, as a Malaysian, I really enjoy the movie very much and I would highly recommend it to all fellow Malaysians!

Verdict: 8.0/10.0

[Coverage] DFKL 2018 Roadshow Activity @ Quill City Mall (March 2018)

Kuala Lumpur, April 2018 – Not long ago, our media team from www.wljack.comhas been given an opportunity to do a coverage on the roadshow activity of Drama Festival Kuala Lumpur (DFKL) 2018. The roadshow has taken place on 3rdMarch 2018 and4th March 2018.

An Opportunity To Act Alongside Veteran and Popular Actors & Actresses!
During the roadshow, there was an on-stage audition whereby we saw over 300 ambitious participants who have taken part in it. They were given an opportunity to act out a specific scenario with their selected guest artistes such as Ziah, Lynn, Datuk Adi Putra and etc.

DFKL 2018 has also invited Jason Kok, Jason Chong, Sheila Rusly and Shahrulezad as the judges for the auditions.

Behind the scene, we managed to have a short conversation with two of the guest artistes Ziah and Lynn. During the short interview, Ziah and Lynn have expressed their excitement for the audition.

Ziah felt that those contestants reminded very much of himself. He highlighted that one of the biggest problem with the contestants is the “fear of being on stage”. However, during the second day of audition, he noticed that many has done “homework” prior to the onstage audition. Thus, their outcomes were better. When he was asked whether he will be taking part in Malay films in the future, he jokingly answered that there will be a possibility but he will try to play as a mute in the movie because he is not confident in his fluency in Bahasa Malaysia.

Lynn on the other hand felt impressed that some of the contestants were very prepared despite facing very strict judges. By seeing the contestants uttering their first line, she could already know that the contestant was well-prepared.

DFKL 2018 will also be having an awards show this year. Do stay tuned for more information.

[Coverage] HYDE Acoustic Concert Tour 2018 黒ミサ Asia Live in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, May 2018 – HYDE, the lead vocalist from the legendary Japanese rock band, L'Arc-en-Ciel, as well as VAMPShas made an amazing appearance in Malaysia last week for his concert tour entitled [HYDE Acoustic Concert Tour 2018 黒ミサ Asia Live in Kuala Lumpur]. It was a spectacular show! Our media team from www.wljack.comhas been given an opportunity to do a coverage on the event.

Great Acoustic Concert! Friendly Fans-servicing!
The concert was held on 12 May 2018 (Saturday) at MCA Hall, 8pm. It was a fantastic concert filled with great performance by HYDE alongside the musicians who have delivered a tympanic pleasure to all of the audiences on the floor.

During the concert, HYDE has demonstrated his eloquence in Bahasa Malaysia by saying not just a few but a lot of lines in BM and multiple times of “Terima Kasih”. This was something seldom seen in concert or events by foreign performers or artistes whereby most of the time the only favorite line uttered by others was only “Saya Cinta Padamu”. But in HYDE’s concert, we heard him saying, “Seronok ke?”, “Sayang kamu semua!”, “Kamu semua sangat cantik!” and etc. Of course, some fans were also responsive enough to cheer for him in Japanese instead, “Ai Shiteru!”.

The whole concert lasted nearly 2 hours and we have been treated with melodious tracks including White Song, Secret Letters, Angel’s Tale, Evergreen, Honey, Forbidden Lover, Kiss of Death, Hoshizora and etc.

It was an enjoyable acoustic concert and million thanks to Toybox Projects for bringing us the show!
